Often called "Indy" or "Naptown", Indianapolis has a long and intimate relationship with Jazz. Having produced such Jazz greats as the famous Montgomery brothers, Buddy, Monk, and of course Wes. Indianapolis is also home to Freddie Hubbard, Slide Hampton, and Jimmy Coe, just to name a few. Jazz in Naptown is coming back strong, and young people have taken to Jazz in a way that we have not experienced in the past. The vintage Jazz connoisseurs of course are enjoying this new era and experiencing the benefits of Jazz's new popularity. This is evident in the INDY JAZZ FEST , Jazz on the Terrace and the many Jazz Clubs and Venues featuring a full Jazz Calendar. Among the artists reviving Jazz in Indy are Charlie Smith, Rob Dixon and many more, some of whom will be featured on this website.
Indianapolis has two active jazz organizations , The Indianapolis Jazz Foundation and The Jazz club Indianapolis, inc.
The Jazz Club of Indianapolis was founded early in 1956 by a trio of jazz record collectors and enthusiasts, the Jazz Club of Indianapolis grew through public concerts of traditional and mainstream classic jazz featuring both local and imported artists and bands. The club’s mission is preservation of the music
The Indianapolis Jazz Foundation a not-for-profit organization is comprised of people who are musicians, club owners, and media supporters, and most importantly, fans.
