Situated on the Ohio River Louisville is definitely a city to see.  Long heralded  for the famed "Kentucky Derby", Louisville or "The Ville" to many , is alive with the sound of jazz. 

 

  Lionel Hampton, vibraphonist, band leader, and jazz legend hails from Louisville as well as vocalist Helen Hume.

 

Louisville is also home to Jamey Aebersold's Summer Jazz Workshops. The workshops are held each year on the campus of the University of Louisville.  Musician come from all around the world to attend, and have been doing so for over 35 years.

 

   There are many Jazz Clubs and Venues featuring a full Jazz Calendar.  Among those keeping jazz flourishing in Louisville are  Jamey Aebersold, and Don  Braden and many more, some of whom will be featured on this website.  Browse the site and the next time you are in Louisville, take a moment to and experience the  of Jazz in Louisville.

 

   Go to the University of Louisville web site (www.jazz.Louisville.edu) and for information on the Jamey Aebersold Jazz Studies Program: Serious About America’s Music-Jazz is the root of Louisville’s jazz popularity.  The program was started by Mr Aebersold in 1985, however Mr. Aebersold has hosted summer workshops since 1977. 

The Jamey Aebersold Jazz Studies Program is one of the few prestigious institutions in the US selected to participate in an International music exchange sponsored by the Open World Leadership Center at the Library of Congress.

Although Louisville does not have a commercial jazz radio station, it does have WLCV radio supported by University of Louisville.

Jazz can be heard a various venues around the city such as the Jazz Factory, Billy’s place for Jazz and well as the University of Louisville.  So the next time you want to get away, hear a little jazz, ride down to Louisville and be pleasantly surprised.
